Stockholm, Sweden (June 3rd) – The High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People (or HAC for N&P), which is now supported by nearly 100 countries, is evolving into a new phase to support implementation of the global goal to protect at least 30% of the world’s land and at least 30% of the world’s ocean by 2030 as the minimum required to halt biodiversity loss and tackle the biodiversity crisis.

In the spirit of Stockholm+50, to build on 50 years of multilateral environmental action to achieve the urgent action needed to secure a healthy planet, the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People (HAC for N&P) is taking concrete steps towards moving into a new phase to support implementation of the global goal to protect at least 30% of the world’s land and ocean by 2030.

Adopting a global ‘30by30’ target within a new post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) is a key part of the solution to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. The HAC for N&P will continue to work, together with all Parties, towards the adoption of this target at the CBD’s fifteenth Conference of the Parties (COP15) later this year. In the meantime, we also need to think forward and prepare to move into a new phase to support the actual implementation of this ambitious goal by 2030, as the biodiversity crisis cannot wait and collective action is needed as soon as possible.

This new phase of the HAC for N&P will have four distinct objectives: (i) continuing coordination and support for implementation of the 30by30 target, (ii) hosting a platform for the exchange of knowledge, best practice and capacity building, (iii) identifying the opportunities for resource mobilisation dedicated to the 30by30 target, and (iv) organizing high-level events to maintain political attention on biodiversity conservation. In order to be successful, it will require updated scientific knowledge as well as dedicated human and financial resources, and, more importantly, cooperation and innovative partnerships among stakeholders.

To this purpose, the HAC for N&P currently works closely with the Global Ocean Alliance on the 30by30 target, as well as with the Leaders’ Pledge for Nature. The three nature initiatives will continue to strengthen relationships towards their collective goals.

The High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People was officially launched in January 2021 at the One Planet Summit (OPS) on biodiversity, led by the Environment Ministries of France and Costa Rica at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) pre-COP25 in San José in 2019. The coalition is currently co-chaired by France and Costa Rica, with the United Kingdom as ocean co-chair, and has 96 members.

Mrs. Amélie de Montchalin, Minister of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion of France said, “Reinforcing the role of the High Ambition Coalition sends a strong political signal to all stakeholders that we are determined to act urgently for a concrete implementation of biodiversity protection by 2030.”

Mr. Franz Tattenbach, Minister of Environment and Energy of Costa Rica said, “Establishing a new role for the High Ambition Coalition to support implementation sends a strong political signal to all stakeholders that we are determined to act urgently to achieve crucial biodiversity targets and achieve the 2050 Vision of living in harmony with nature.”

Lord Goldsmith, Minister for Pacific and the Environment of the United Kingdom said, ‘The High Ambition Coalition has been exceptionally effective in drawing attention to the extinction crisis and rallying governments behind a commitment to protect our unique natural areas and the people that live there. Now we are doubling down to ensure we act urgently and together to fulfill that commitment.”
